Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has finished third behind AC Milan's Kaka for the title of FIFA's world player of the year.Ronaldo was also pipped for the title of European Footballer of the Year by Kaka earlier this month and had to be content with third place for the FIFA award, with Barcelona's young winger Lionel Messi finishing runner-up.Ronaldo said he was hugely honoured to be short-listed for the award - which has never been won by a Premier League player, saying: "I was so pleased when I got nominated. The first thing I did was tell the people closest to me. It's a real honour for me to be considered one of the three best players in the world."Kaka has had a glittering year for AC Milan during which they won the Champions League, while personally he has won the Ballon d'Or award for the European footballer of the year and FIFPro's world player of the year voted by fellow professionals and World Soccer's player of the year.Kaka said at the awards ceremony at Zurich's Opera House: "Tonight is a really special night for me - it was a dream for me just to play for Sao Paulo and one game for Brazil. But the Bible says God can give you more than you even ask for."The award is voted on by all national team managers and captains, and this year's shortlist contained three young players nominated for the first time.

Ferguson hails Ronaldo

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed star winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who is up for two major awards over the next fortnight.
Ronaldo is in contention for both the prestigious Ballon D'Or foon Sunday, as well as the Fifa World Player of the Year prize, which will be decided on 17th December.
While it is anticipated that he will be edged out by Milan's Kaka for the European prize, he could beat off the Brazilian and Lionel Messi - who are also on the three man short-list - for the World Player award.
For he is the only member of the trio who won a domestic title last season, and he has already scored 11 goals this term, which come on top of his 23 strikes last term.
Chance
Speaking of Ronaldo possibly landing the World Player award, Ferguson said: "He must have a chance and it would be fantastic for the boy if he did win it.
"It would justify the amount of work he puts in to be the best player because he really does work hard.
"He doesn't really need an endorsement from me. He gets those through his performances on the field. Without question he is one of the best players in the world."
The Portuguese winger has improved year on year since Ferguson signed him five years ago for £12million from Sporting Lisbon as a raw 18-year-old.
Ferguson added: "His decision-making is very good now and his goalscoring has improved every year, which is a terrific sign.
"He is in double figures already and we have not even reached December. That augurs well for the rest of the season.
Improvement
"Providing he keeps fit he can go on to beat last season's goalscoring record, which would continue the improvement we have seen in the last few years.
"Everything is moving in the right direction for the lad."
United have not received a request for Ronaldo to attend the Ballon D'Or presentation on Sunday, which suggests their man is not going to win.
But he might not have been able to make it anyway as he is required for Premier League duty against Fulham at Old Trafford on Monday night.
In an added bonus for the Old Trafford faithful, the game will also see the return of Wayne Rooney following an ankle injury.
